Seismic Retrofit with Carbon Fiber: How to Strengthen a Building
Carbon fiber (CFRP) retrofit raises load capacity without demolishing — a modern method. Process and advantages.
Turkey is an earthquake country. Can you make the building you live in safer without demolishing it or moving out? The answer: carbon fiber retrofit.
What is carbon fiber? CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) is a fabric with higher strength than steel at almost no weight. Bonded with epoxy resin around columns and beams, it gives the reinforced-concrete member extra load capacity and ductility.
Why carbon fiber? - **Thin**: indistinguishable from paint, no space lost - **Light**: adds no load to the structure - **Fast**: completed in days; no need to move out - **Strong**: mass strength close to steel
How does the application proceed? 1. A structural engineer runs the static analysis and prepares the retrofit project 2. Surfaces are stripped, concrete sanded 3. Epoxy primer is applied 4. CFRP fabric is bonded in the project's direction and layer count 5. Mortar coating follows for UV and fire protection
Can every building be retrofitted? If the static analysis says yes, it can; in some cases jacketing or extra columns are combined.
